Senior Needs Assessment Barry & Calhoun Counties 2019

View / Download

The State of Michigan requires senior service providers to conduct a community needs assessment every three years. An assessment of the community’s senior programming and needs allows service providers and other organizations in the community to obtain a picture of the major needs facing aging residents. When organizations conduct a needs assessment together, they gain the benefit of a variety of perspectives, knowledge, and expertise.

This needs assessment exemplifies a partnership between the Region 3B Area Agency on Aging (AAA) and the Calhoun County Office of Senior Services (OSS) in cooperation with the Barry County Commission on Aging. These organizations strive to be responsive to the needs of the aging population in the areas they serve. This assessment is one tool being used to accomplish that goal. We have made an effort to approach this community needs assessment with no pre- conceived ideas about the needs of the senior populations of Barry and Calhoun counties.

To support a comprehensive assessment process, CareWell Services Southwest commissioned Conduent Healthy Communities Institute (HCI) to provide data analytics and synthesis expertise to support the Calhoun and Barry Counties Senior Needs Assessment. Conduent Healthy Communities Institute is a multi-disciplinary team of public health experts with clients across 38 states that works to drive improved community health outcomes by assessing needs, developing focused strategies, identifying appropriate intervention programs, establishing progress monitoring systems, and implementing performance evaluation processes.

The Community Needs Assessment is one method used by funders to determine the priority of needs, identify gaps, and design interventions to address the unique and varied needs across the region. As a part of our efforts to ensure that the needs of seniors are addressed at all levels of decision making in our communities, the results of this assessment are disseminated and made part of broader needs assessment efforts such as the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) mandated of health systems, local collaborative addressing community needs such as the Barry Community Resource Network and Barry Health Services Network in Barry County and The Collaborating Council and the Regional Health Alliance in Calhoun County.
